Captain (Dr.) Idahosa Wells Okunbo (JP) was born in January 1958 in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, to the family of Rev. Robert Amos Okunbo, a clergyman. Hosa Okunba, as he was known, became a pilot at the age of 21 and had accumulated 7,500 hours of flying time as a commercial jet plane pilot by the age of 30. He moved into agriculture many years later, and his company, Well Farm Limited, has invested millions of dollars in greenhouse farming and agro-allied businesses in Edo State.

Idahosa Wells Okunbo’s Childhood

Okunbo went to Government Primary School in Benin City, Edo State, for elementary school. He received his Senior School Certificate from the Federal Government College in Warri, Delta State, in 1971. After graduating from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Training Centre in Zaria, Kaduna State, he became a commercial pilot at the age of 21. In 1983, he graduated from the ACME School of Aeronautics in Fort Worth, Texas, with an Airline Transport Pilot License.

Idahosa Wells Okunbo’s Professional Life

Wells Okunbo worked as a commercial pilot for Intercontinental Airlines and Okada Airlines. He was promoted to captain at the age of 25 in 1983 and retired five years later. Captain Hosa founded his first company, Hoslyn Ventures Nigeria Ltd, in 1986 and began operations in 1988. For more than two decades, Hoslyn Ventures Nigeria Ltd, which represented Akzo Nobel Catalyst, was responsible for the successful supply of refinery catalyst that was used for FCCU in major refineries in Nigeria. His company also represented a variety of other refinery plant equipment. Between 1990 and 1994, the company was involved in the procurement of major engineering components for the Warri Refinery Turn Around Maintenance.

In 2001, he was able to complete and commission the early production facility for Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) at Ajaoki in Edo State through his company Hoslyn Technologies Nigeria Ltd, one of the first indigenous companies to carry out Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPCI) contracts in Nigeria. His company, OMS Tankers Ltd, has aided in increasing oil production in Nigeria and ensuring its long-term viability by providing dedicated and efficient security solutions for offshore production assets of major international oil companies operating in the country over the last decade. He is also the chairman of CMES OMS Venture, an oil and gas service provider.

 

In 2012, Okunbo funded the film Black November through Wells Entertainment Limited.

Okunbo unveiled a $750 million farm in Ovia North East, Edo State, in March 2016, intending to create 25,000 direct and 60,000 indirect jobs. He has aided youth empowerment in his home state of Edo and beyond as a philanthropist.

Ocean Marine Security Limited, an offshore asset-protection company founded by the business tycoon, provides services to major oil companies in Nigeria, including NNPC.

Westminster Security Solutions Nigeria Ltd, a Westminster Group PLC UK franchise, is one of his major shareholders.

He also controlled the Wells Group of Companies, which included Wells Dredging Ltd, Wells Property Development Ltd, and Wells Entertainments Ltd.

His name is linked to Ocean Marine Solutions Tankers Limited, which is thought to be the owner of Nigeria’s first marine tankers; Hoslyn Habitat Limited, a design, construction, and landscaping firm; and Gyro Air Limited, which operates charter flights.

He was known to be the CEO of the following businesses:

Secure Anchorage Area Limited (SAA), Joined Marine Environment Guard Limited (JMEG), Digisteel Integrated Services Limited, and Phil Nugent Nigeria Limited, Integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Limited (IEDM), a major shareholder in the Ibadan and Yola Electricity Distribution Companies.

Okunbo is a member of the NetCom Development and Investment Ltd. board of directors, which is the holding company for Nigeria’s telecommunications behemoth NTEL.

Personal Life of Idahosa Wells Okunbo

Okunbo is married and has a family of his own. He is a resident of Benin City.

Captain Hosa was awarded The African Titan Award by The American Congress in 2012 for being a voice for the Niger Delta people through his film “Black November.”

In November 2012, the University of Benin awarded him a Doctorate in recognition of his community service and achievements as a successful entrepreneur.

As an old student of Federal Government College in Warri, Delta State, Okumba was awarded the “Worthy Ambassador of Unity Award” in March 2016.

Oba Erediauwa, the traditional ruler of the Edo people in Edo State, honoured him with the Traditional Beads on October 2nd, 2014, for being a worthy son of his hometown.

Wells, Captain Hosa Okunbo’s unexpected death on August 7, 2021, has left the entire people of Edo state in mourning, as he was a good man who had a positive impact on many people’s lives.
