Yoruba politicians are traitors, betrayal — Asari-Dokubo Declares

Former Niger Delta militant leader, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, has publicly renounced his political support for Yoruba politicians, accusing them of betrayal and disloyalty to the Ijaw people and the broader Niger Delta region.

In a strongly-worded video circulated on social media on Monday, Asari-Dokubo, who once led the defunct Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, expressed deep disappointment over what he described as the Yoruba elite’s political ingratitude.

According to him, despite the Niger Delta’s past sacrifices for southern unity, the Yoruba political class has failed to reciprocate.

“The Yorubas have betrayed us. After all we did, they turned their backs on us,” Dokubo declared in the video. He further alleged that Yoruba politicians have benefited from long-standing alliances with the Niger Delta, only to abandon those ties when it mattered most.

The ex-militant noted a significant shift in his political outlook, revealing a newfound preference for building relationships with leaders from Northern Nigeria. “I now support Northern politicians because they are not traitors like their Yoruba counterparts,” he said, adding that northern leaders have shown him more “consistency and respect” than those from the South-West.

Asari-Dokubo’s comments have sparked sharp reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, with some viewing it as a dangerous rhetoric that could further strain regional unity, while others see it as a reflection of the growing discontent within the South-South over political marginalization.

His remarks come amid an increasingly tense political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections, with shifting alliances and regional grievances threatening to redefine Nigeria’s political coalitions.
