The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be forced to suspend its planned national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, following fresh controversy over an alleged forgery involving top officials of the party and staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and INEC, accusing unnamed officials of forging and cloning his signature on an official correspondence sent to the electoral umpire in relation to the forthcoming convention.

In three separate petitions dated October 15, 2025, Mr. Anyanwu described the alleged act as a “criminal conspiracy” and demanded a full-scale investigation and prosecution of those involved.

At the centre of the dispute is a letter referenced PDP/DOM/GF.2/Vol.1M/25-140, dated August 25, 2025, which was purportedly signed by him and transmitted to INEC as part of preparations for the party’s elective convention.

According to the petitions, obtained by Peoples Gazette and acknowledged by the relevant agencies between October 15 and 16, Mr. Anyanwu insists he neither authored nor authorised the document.

“Regrettably, the quoted letter was never signed, authorised or known to me. It is shocking to have a forged or cloned version of my signature on the letter,” he wrote.

“I, therefore, request that this criminal conduct by officers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and their collaborators within INEC be investigated and the culprits prosecuted.”

The development has thrown fresh uncertainty over the already tense build-up to the 2025 convention, amid reports of internal power tussles and factional disputes within the main opposition party.

Party insiders fear that unless the issue is resolved swiftly, the controversy could stall the convention or, worse still, trigger a fresh legal battle capable of paralysing the PDP’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Mr. Anyanwu said his intervention was aimed at protecting the integrity of the party’s administrative processes, warning that allowing forged documents to stand could undermine public confidence in the PDP’s internal democracy.
