Wike Speaks on Contesting Against Tinubu in 2027 if PDP Zones Presidency to South

As political speculations surrounding the 2027 general elections begin to surface, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared he has no intentions of contesting against President Bola Tinubu, even if his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), zones the presidential ticket to the South.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin published on Saturday, Wike stated unequivocally that he is currently aligned with President Tinubu and would not challenge him at the polls.

“I will not contest again. Should I contest against somebody I’m working with? Who would win it if not him (Tinubu)?” Wike said during the interview.

The former governor of Rivers State also reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, despite his controversial role in the APC-led federal administration. He dismissed any notion of defecting to another party.

“I can’t do that, I’m not afraid – how will I build a house and you now ask me to vacate the place?” he said. “It’s you that will leave the house, not me that built it. You want to spoil a house that I built? I won’t allow you. I won’t leave, I will remain there.”

Addressing internal discord within the PDP, Wike criticized party leaders in the South-East who have reportedly threatened to exit the party if his ally, Samuel Anyanwu, is retained as National Secretary. He singled out figures like former Imo State governor Achike Udenwa and former Ebonyi State governor Sam Egwu, accusing them of lacking political weight and failing to deliver electoral victories.

“Achike Udenwa has no single National Assembly member, he didn’t give his party three percent of votes, yet is threatening. Sam Egwu did not produce a governor or any NASS member. They are empty,” Wike stated.

On the possibility of the PDP zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, Wike remained skeptical, alleging internal dishonesty within the party.

“I have told them that if they zone, when we get to the bridge, we will cross it. But they are fraudulent and I have told them that it will kill them,” he added.

Wike’s comments come amid growing speculation over the PDP’s strategy for 2027 and highlight ongoing tensions between regional factions within the party.
