The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, appears to have regained control of the party’s national structure following the emergence of a new acting national chairman loyal to him.

The Wike-backed camp on Monday announced Muhammed Abdulrahman as the new Acting National Chairman of the PDP, marking a significant shift in the party’s internal power dynamics.

The announcement came shortly after a series of suspensions rocked the party. The National Working Committee (NWC), led by Amb. Umar Damagum, had earlier suspended Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary, and other officials believed to be loyal to Wike.

In a counter move, the Wike faction swiftly announced the suspension of Damagum and several members of the NWC before unveiling Abdulrahman as his replacement.

Speaking to journalists at the PDP office in Abuja, Abdulrahman confirmed that he had officially assumed his new role and was heading to the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza.

“We are all aware of the current pitiable state of our glorious party because of the actions and inactions of our leaders and members,” Abdulrahman said.

“From being the ruling party for 16 uninterrupted years to being an opposition party for over 10 years now, we have become weakened due to the unexplainable defections of our governors, legislators, and council chairmen.

“I have accepted to become Acting National Chairman at this difficult time through the mercy of God and the instrumentality of critical stakeholders of this party.”

He further stated that his priority would be to heal divisions, reunify the party, and restore internal discipline within the PDP.

Shortly after his remarks, Abdulrahman proceeded to Wadata Plaza to address a gathering of supporters. However, the situation quickly became tense as supporters of Damagum also converged on the premises, resulting in a heavy police presence to prevent a possible clash.

At least ten police Hilux vehicles were deployed around the secretariat, with officers maintaining a firm perimeter as both factions chanted solidarity songs.

The fresh development deepens the internal crisis threatening the PDP’s unity, as both camps continue to lay claim to the party’s leadership.
