Wike Announces Plans To Build New INEC Headquarters in Abuja As 2027 Presidential Elections Approaches

As preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to take shape, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced plans to construct a new headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

The new facility will be located in the Maitama district, one of the capital’s high-profile areas.

According to Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new INEC headquarters will be performed by President Bola Tinubu next week.

Olayinka told TheCable on Saturday that the project is part of a broader initiative by the Tinubu administration to commemorate its second anniversary in office with both the completion of ongoing projects and the launch of new infrastructure across the FCT.

In May, Minister Wike had revealed that several key infrastructure projects were lined up for inauguration as part of the administration’s achievements. These include the newly renovated Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC), new bus terminals at Kugbo and Mabushi, and major roadworks such as the Apo-Wassa Road and the N16 interchange connecting Maitama through Katampe to Jahi.

Also among the projects are the inner northern expressway stretching from Ring Road 3 (Idu to Kubwa Road), the CN8 link from Obafemi Awolowo Way to the Court of Appeal, the N20 flyover on the Kubwa Road, and several access roads, including those in Kabusa, Ketti, Giri District, and a 15km stretch from A2 Junction on the Abuja-Lokoja Road to Pai in the Kwali Area Council.

In the Bwari Area Council, improvements are underway in areas such as Ushafa, War College, and the Army checkpoint.

The planned INEC headquarters is expected to provide a modern and secure administrative hub for Nigeria’s electoral body as the country heads into what is widely anticipated to be a closely watched 2027 presidential election.

Construction of the headquarters comes amid calls for improved transparency, logistics, and operational efficiency in the country’s electoral process. The project underscores the FCTA’s renewed focus on infrastructure that supports national institutions and governance.
