VP Shettima’s Replacement Emerges

New details have surfaced following a tense altercation that disrupted the North-East Consultative Meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State over the weekend, shedding light on internal party rifts and raising fresh questions about Vice President Kashim Shettima’s political future.

According to sources within the APC who spoke to Vanguard on Monday, the chaos at the gathering stemmed from mounting mistrust among top party figures regarding who should potentially replace Shettima as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 general elections.

Insiders say that while the meeting was billed as a routine consultative event, it quickly devolved into a scene of subtle maneuvering and veiled accusations.

At the heart of the dispute is a growing faction within the party that is quietly agitating for a new vice-presidential candidate, citing Shettima’s perceived lack of visibility and assertiveness during key national challenges.

“There are people who feel the Muslim-Muslim ticket that brought Tinubu and Shettima to power in 2023 may not be politically sustainable in 2027,” a senior APC official from the North-East told Vanguard. “Others simply believe Shettima hasn’t lived up to expectations.”

Prominent among those being considered as possible replacements is former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, a Christian from Bauchi State. His name, along with that of at least one other prominent northern figure, has been repeatedly mentioned in closed-door discussions as the party begins to re-evaluate its electoral strategy.

While many APC stakeholders were unaware of the brewing opposition to Shettima, sources confirmed that three APC governors from the region — those of Borno, Yobe, and Gombe — have held several private meetings in recent weeks aimed at containing the fallout and presenting a unified front.

“The governors have been trying to keep things quiet,” one source said. “The plan was to make it appear like all six North-East states were fully behind Tinubu and Shettima for 2027, even if that’s not the full reality.”

The Gombe meeting, meant to rally party unity and energize the base ahead of 2027, ended up exposing some of the undercurrents threatening to divide the APC in the North-East. Despite official attempts to downplay the incident, the tensions now appear too pronounced to ignore.

As the party begins its early preparations for the next general election, all eyes will be on how the APC leadership handles the delicate balancing act of retaining internal cohesion while responding to calls for a more inclusive and dynamic ticket.
