US Lawmaker move to impeach Trump
Houston congressman Al Green on Wednesday announced he would file articles of impeachment against Donald Trump after the president said the United States would move to take over the Gaza Strip.
Trump floated the idea during a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, proposing the U.S. assume ownership of the territory and redevelop the land. The president also suggested that residents of Gaza be displaced to other countries during the take over— a move that alarmed Democrats and garnered skepticism from some Republicans.
On the House floor Wednesday, Green called the suggestion ethnic cleansing, “especially when it emanates from the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world.”
“I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun,” Green said. “I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”
The move would be the congressman’s fourth attempt to impeachment Trump after three separate attempts failed during the president’s first term in office.
Green first introduced articles of impeachment in 2017, and twice in 2019. Each time, the efforts were overwhelming ineffective, and the third try was tabled by the Democratic-controlled House.
“When the people demand it, it will be done,” Green said on Wednesday. “I did it before. I laid the foundation for impeachment and it was done. Nobody knows more about it than I, and I know that its time for us to lay the foundation again.”
