Tinubu Restricts Wike, Others to Three-Vehicle Convoys
In a bold move to reduce government expenditure, President Bola Tinubu has announced that ministers and heads of federal agencies, including prominent figures like Nyesom Wike, will be limited to using a maximum of three vehicles in their official convoys.
This decision is part of a broader effort by the administration to cut the cost of governance.
The restriction, announced on Thursday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, applies to all ministers, ministers of state, and heads of government agencies. In addition to the convoy limit, President Tinubu has ordered that no additional vehicles be assigned for movement, further tightening the reins on public spending.
This directive aligns with earlier steps taken by the president to reduce expenses. In January, Tinubu had significantly slashed his foreign travel entourage from 50 to 20 officials and his local entourage from 50 to 25. Vice President Kashim Shettima’s entourage was similarly reduced, with foreign trips limited to five officials and local trips to 15.
In addition to the vehicle restriction, the president has limited security personnel attached to each official. Going forward, each minister or head of agency will have a maximum of five security officers—comprising four police officers and one Department of State Services (DSS) officer.
President Tinubu also tasked the National Security Adviser with coordinating with military, paramilitary, and security agencies to assess appropriate reductions in vehicle use and security personnel deployment across these services.
The directive, which aims to streamline governance and reduce excessive spending, requires immediate compliance, signaling the administration’s seriousness about enforcing these changes.
