BREAKING: Tinubu Government Increases International Passport Fee To ₦200,000
The Federal Government has approved a significant increase in the cost of obtaining a Nigerian international passport, sparking fresh public debate over affordability.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced that the fee for a 32-page passport with a five-year validity has risen from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000. Similarly, the 64-page passport with a 10-year validity, which previously cost ₦100,000, will now be issued at ₦200,000.

The NIS explained that the increment is part of a broader reform to improve passport production, reduce delays, and sustain the ongoing transition to e-passports across the country.
“The adjustment in fees is aimed at ensuring a more efficient service delivery, global standardization, and the long-term sustainability of passport issuance,” the Service stated.
The announcement has triggered mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many criticizing the move as an additional burden on citizens already grappling with rising living costs under the Tinubu administration.

Civil society groups and travel agencies have also raised concerns that the sharp increase could make international travel more difficult for average Nigerians.
Despite the criticisms, immigration authorities maintain that the new fee structure will help curb corruption, eliminate racketeering, and ensure transparency in the issuance process.
The new charges are expected to take effect immediately across all passport offices in Nigeria and foreign missions.
