President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has openly defended the idea of a one-party political system in Nigeria, asserting that there is “nothing wrong” with such an arrangement as he welcomed new members and endorsements at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit in Abuja on Thursday.

“Welcome to the progressives; sweep them clean,” he declared, in reference to recent defections to the APC by opposition governors and political figures. The president’s remarks signaled a growing consolidation of political power around the ruling party.
While reaffirming his working relationship with Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu made no direct mention of Shettima’s role in future political plans—raising speculation amid recent endorsements that excluded the vice president.

On the economic front, Tinubu defended his controversial reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which he described as “the grandparent of corruption.” He emphasized the reforms’ long-term benefits, noting that “there’s nothing good that comes easy.”
Highlighting recent anti-corruption achievements, Tinubu revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had recovered over 750 properties from an individual implicated in corruption.
Turning to legislative matters, the president urged the National Assembly to expedite the passage of tax-related bills to support ongoing economic measures. “Senate President, Speaker, where are the tax bills? I hope they are on their way,” he said, pressing for urgency.

Tinubu also laid out a broader vision for Nigeria’s future, calling for industrialization and continental leadership. “We have the opportunity to make this continent a great one, not just Nigeria,” he said. He identified indiscipline, corruption, and abuse of power as key obstacles to progress but promised his administration would tackle them head-on.
Ending his address on a note of optimism and party solidarity, Tinubu rallied the crowd: “Sweep the dust away. Thank you for your endorsements.”
The summit marks a pivotal moment for the APC as it seeks to cement its influence ahead of the next election cycle—signaling a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape that could shape the country’s governance for years to come.
