Tension as Security Agencies Stop Peter Obi Birthday Rally in Kaduna, 24 Hours After Edo Governor’s Threat
Barely 24 hours after the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, issued a public warning to Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, security agencies in Kaduna State have reportedly shut down a birthday rally organized in Obi’s honour.
The rally, planned by supporters of the former Anambra State governor, was part of nationwide celebrations marking his birthday.

However, organizers say they were suddenly instructed by security officials to suspend the event.

According to a social media post by Mallam Jabir, one of the rally’s coordinators, the security personnel cited “orders from above” as the reason for the abrupt cancellation.

“Kaduna State security agencies have just issued a directive that we can’t do rally in the state, citing orders from above,” Jabir posted online.
While no official statement has been released by the Kaduna State Government or police authorities, the timing of the security action has raised eyebrows. Just a day earlier, Governor Okpebholo had publicly warned Obi against visiting Edo State without prior clearance from the state government, declaring, “There’s a new sheriff in town, whatever happens to him, he should take it.”
The clampdown in Kaduna is the latest in a series of political tensions surrounding Obi, whose rising popularity among young Nigerians continues to draw both support and controversy.

Observers say the sequence of events may point to a growing discomfort within the political establishment over Obi’s influence, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
Efforts to reach Labour Party officials and security agencies for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
Meanwhile, social media platforms have been flooded with messages of solidarity from Obi’s supporters, many of whom view the disruption of the rally as a politically motivated attempt to silence opposition voices.
