Residents of Mazanya Village in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State were thrown into panic on Saturday following a shocking and unexpected incursion by soldiers from neighbouring Niger Republic.

According to multiple security sources and eyewitness accounts, a convoy of Nigerien military vehicles crossed into Nigerian territory and opened fire, heightening tensions in a region already plagued by insecurity.

The incident, which occurred around 2:00 p.m., involved four heavily armed military gun trucks and a Toyota Jeep said to be under the command of a Nigerien officer identified as Captain Salifou Mono. The foreign troops reportedly stormed the village without prior notice or clearance from Nigerian authorities, firing shots indiscriminately into the air and sending residents fleeing for safety.

Residents Describe Moment of Chaos

Several villagers who spoke under anonymity said they initially mistook the attackers for bandits, given the frequency of raids in Jibia and surrounding areas. Many were forced to abandon shops, farms, and homes as gunfire echoed across the quiet border community.

“It was terrifying. We heard heavy gunshots and everybody started running. We didn’t know who they were or what they wanted,” a resident of Mazanya recounted. “Some people hid in their houses, others ran towards the bush. We only later heard they were soldiers from Niger.”

Another eyewitness said the convoy moved through the village “as though conducting a tactical operation,” creating confusion among locals who had no prior warning of any joint border exercise.

Nigerian Forces Respond Swiftly

Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported that Nigerian security agencies reacted promptly after receiving distress calls from community members. Troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA, alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), mobilised to the area.

The Nigerian forces reportedly tracked and intercepted the Nigerien soldiers, who were already deep inside Mazanya, and immediately initiated a controlled escort to return them back across the Danmasani Border, which connects Katsina State with parts of southern Niger Republic.

Sources said the interception was carried out without confrontation, as Nigerian authorities sought to avoid escalating an already dangerous situation in a region marked by fragile diplomatic and military cooperation.

Nigerien Commander Issues Apology

Following the incident, Captain Salifou Mono was said to have expressed regret over the unauthorised entry into Nigerian territory. The Nigerien commander reportedly offered an apology to Nigerian security officials, assuring them that such a breach would not happen again.

While details of the discussion between the two sides remain confidential, security sources disclosed that the Nigerien troops admitted the incursion was not sanctioned by their high command. Preliminary information suggests they may have been pursuing a suspicious group or acting on faulty intelligence, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Border Breach Heightens Security Concerns

The incident, first reported by PlatinumPost, adds a troubling dimension to the already volatile security landscape along the Nigeria–Niger border. The frontier, particularly between Katsina and southern Niger Republic, has long been a corridor for armed groups, smuggling rings, and transnational criminal networks.

Both countries have struggled to contain the influence of jihadist movements and bandit gangs operating across the Sahel region. The 2023 military coup in Niger also complicated regional cooperation, with diplomatic ties between Niamey and Abuja strained over ECOWAS sanctions and political disagreements.

Security analysts warn that such unauthorised military incursions deepen tension and carry the risk of unintended armed confrontation.

“This incident underscores the urgent need for stronger communication channels and clearer rules of engagement between border forces,” a defence expert told our correspondent. “Any misunderstanding along these borders can have serious implications for regional stability.”

Katsina: A Hotbed of Banditry and Border Insecurity

Katsina remains one of the most affected states in northern Nigeria when it comes to banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling. Communities in Jibia, Batsari, Safana, Danmusa, and Kankara local government areas have endured repeated attacks from criminal gangs who take advantage of the porous border.

The Mazanya area, specifically, has witnessed cross-border infiltration, with bandits often slipping into Nigeria from hideouts in Niger Republic. This has prompted several joint operations in the past, though cooperation has fluctuated depending on political developments in Niamey.

Many residents expressed concern that the latest incident could worsen security challenges if not thoroughly investigated.

“Bandits are already disturbing us. Now soldiers from another country enter without permission? Government must take this seriously,” a community leader in Jibia said.

National Security Agencies Expected to Launch Probe

Although officials have not yet released a formal statement, sources within the military suggest that Nigeria will likely initiate a full investigation to determine the motive behind the Nigerien troops’ entry and whether the act was rogue, mistaken, or deliberate.

Diplomatic channels between Abuja and Niamey are also expected to be activated to prevent future occurrences and reinforce the need for mutual respect of territorial boundaries.

Growing Need for Improved Border Governance

The Nigeria–Niger border stretches over 1,600 kilometres and remains one of the most difficult to police. Analysts argue that without improved surveillance, stronger intelligence sharing, and better military coordination, incidents like Saturday’s breach may recur.

Furthermore, with jihadist groups like ISWAP and other Sahel-based militias expanding their influence, experts fear that loosely monitored borders could allow them to exploit gaps between national forces.

Conclusion

The Saturday afternoon incident in Mazanya Village has amplified fears in an already insecure region, but swift intervention by Nigerian forces averted possible escalation. While the Nigerien commander’s apology has temporarily eased tension, many residents remain anxious and uncertain, urging the Nigerian government to fortify border security and demand accountability from its northern neighbour.

As both countries continue to navigate political and security complexities, the episode serves as a stark reminder of the fragile balance along the Nigeria–Niger frontier — and the urgent need for stronger cooperation to prevent future breakdowns that could jeopardise civilian lives.
