South South States Unite behind Tinubu as remaining PDP Governors set to join APC
As the 2027 general elections draw closer, the South-South region of Nigeria appears to be gravitating toward President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC), as more governors from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) consider crossing party lines.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this revelation on Saturday during a high-profile reception in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to welcome Governor Umo Eno into the APC. Eno’s defection marks a significant win for the ruling party in a region long considered a stronghold of the PDP.

Speaking at the event, Akpabio hinted that the momentum may soon sweep through other states in the region, suggesting that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri could be the next to defect to the APC.
“Governor Umo Eno, after you, who knows—Rivers State will tumble, after Rivers State, Bayelsa will join,” Akpabio declared to loud applause. “Of course, we won the election in Edo State,” he added, citing the APC’s recent electoral gains in the region.
Akpabio also commended Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, whom he claimed had already shifted allegiance, though there has been no official confirmation of his defection.

He emphasized that the APC’s growing influence in the South-South signals a united regional front for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“Henceforth, come 2027, the South-South will go one way, and the South-South will vote for President Tinubu,” he said.
The Senate President described the people of Akwa Ibom as being “fully behind” Governor Eno’s decision to join the APC, calling it a reflection of the state’s trust in the party’s leadership.

The developments come as the APC intensifies efforts to consolidate political support across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. If more defections materialize, it could significantly weaken the PDP’s foothold in the South-South and reshape the political landscape heading into 2027.
