Sheikh Gumi Abandons Supporters, Reportedly Flees to Turkey Over Potential U.S. Military Action

Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has reportedly fled Nigeria for Turkey, leaving behind his followers amid growing anxiety over a possible U.S. military intervention targeting terrorist activities in the country.

The unconfirmed reports, which surfaced across social media on Monday, claim the Kaduna-based cleric quietly departed the country as speculations intensify over President Donald Trump’s threat to deploy American troops to Nigeria if attacks on Christians are not halted.

Gumi, who has consistently positioned himself as a mediator between bandits and the Nigerian public, has long courted controversy for his comments and perceived closeness to armed groups. His stance has drawn criticism from many Nigerians who believe his activities embolden criminal elements.

In recent weeks, he has been one of the most vocal opponents of Trump’s warning, condemning Nigerians who supported the idea of foreign intervention. In a recent Facebook post, Gumi described the former U.S. president as a “liar,” accusing him of exploiting religious tensions for geopolitical gain.

He wrote:

“Inter-communal hostilities, herders-farmers conflict, indigenous vs. settlers clashes are all results of poverty, poor education, moral debauchery, and poor governance — not religion. Inviting a liar, a genocidal supporter, a racist, a supremacist, a colonist to interfere on the side of Christians specifically is unpatriotic, shameful and obnoxious.”

He further argued that some Nigerian Christians pushing for U.S. involvement were motivated by “Islamophobia,” while insisting that the majority of Christians and Muslims coexist peacefully.

However, as global attention turns to whether Trump will carry out his threat, online users have raised questions about Gumi’s sudden disappearance.

An X (formerly Twitter) user, @KizyUzoma, wrote:
Nigeria terrorists spokesman Sheikh Gumi reportedly flees to Turkey… leaving behind other terrorist sympathisers. The fear of President Trump.

Another user, @GeneralSnow_, queried how he managed to leave the country:
So Gumi don run go Turkey? Ok na. He passed through our immigration abi? Ok na.

Similarly, @VivianRora posted:
Gumi has fled to Turkey, leaving behind wassaping and other terrorist sympathisers. The fear of Trump.

As of the time of filing this report, Sheikh Gumi has not publicly commented on claims that he left Nigeria, and no official confirmation has come from security agencies or his associates.

The situation remains fluid as both local and international observers await further clarity on the alleged U.S. plans and the cleric’s reported departure.
