BREAKING: Setback for APC as Hundreds of Members Defect to NDC in Kano

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has suffered another setback ahead of the 2027 general elections following the defection of hundreds of its members to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The defectors were received by the NDC senatorial candidate for Kano South, Dr Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya, during an event in Takai Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

Bataiya welcomed the new members into the NDC and urged them to work with other party members to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

News Week Nigeria reports that the latest defection is coming amid a series of political realignments in Kano, where opposition and ruling party politicians have continued to shift allegiances ahead of the elections.

The NDC has recorded a number of defections from the APC in the state since former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, emerged as the party’s vice-presidential candidate.

Kwankwaso, a prominent political figure in Kano, is expected to play a significant role in the NDC’s campaign in the state as the 2027 elections draw closer.

However, the political movement has not been one-sided, as some politicians previously aligned with Kwankwaso’s camp have also reportedly defected to the APC.

The growing movement of politicians between the major political camps reflects the intensifying battle for political control of Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.

With the elections still months away, more defections and political realignments are expected as parties intensify their mobilisation and campaigns across the state.
