Senator Gershom Bassey Resigns from PDP, Says Party No Longer Redeemable
Former Senator representing Cross River South, Gershom Henry Bassey, has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking the end of his decades-long association with the party he helped to establish.
In a heartfelt message shared with supporters and political associates, Bassey, a former governorship aspirant, expressed pride in the contributions he and his colleagues made through the PDP, but lamented the party’s current state, saying it appears unwilling or unable to reform.
“It’s been a blast being a founding member of PDP. I’m proud of all our accomplishments,” he wrote. “We produced three two-term governors, numerous senators and members of the House of Reps, many House of Assembly members, LGA chairmen and councillors. We impacted positively on Cross River State.”
However, Bassey added a tone of disappointment, noting, “But it looks like the vehicle is broken and is not ready to redeem itself.”
He ended his message with warm wishes to his former party members: “Best wishes, my dear brothers and sisters.”
Senator Bassey’s exit from the PDP comes amid ongoing internal wrangling and defections across party lines nationwide, as political alignments shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
