BREAKING: Sanusi Lamido reinstated as Emir of Kano
Sanusi Lamido reinstated as Kano Emir after Kano House of Assembly dissolves four emirates and removes Ado Bayero.
The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all the four newly created emirate councils in the state.
The dissolution of the affected Emirates follows the deliberations on the floor of the House during Thursday’s plenary.
The Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Bill was considered on the floor of the assembly after scaling second and third reading on Thursday morning.
Earlier, the deputy speaker, Muhammad Butu, explained that repealing the law would revive the lost glory of Kano as the division of Kano emirate into five reduced the capacity and dignity of the state at national level.
The majority leader, Alhaji Lawan Dala, said that the emirate council served as a custodian of culture which was distorted by the creation of the four additional emirates.
With the amendment of the law, all the four new emirate councils were abolished leaving only the Kano emirate.
The assembly also adopted a motion to create a new second-class emirate council in the state.
The assembly had in 2019 passed an executive bill that split the state into five emirates through the creation of four new emirates.
The creation of the four new emirates suffered a temporary setback after a state high court nullified the move and the appointment of emirs.
But the then governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, sent a fresh bill to the lawmakers who again approved the creation of the four new emirates with first-class emirs in Gaya, Rano, Karaye and Bichi.
People interpreted Ganduje’s creation of the new emirates as a move to whittle down the influence of then Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, who was having a running battle with the governor over the emir’s alleged political interference and insubordination.
The state government on March 9, 2020 dethroned Sanusi on the grounds of insubordination, and he was replaced by Aminu Ado-Bayero, who was transferred from Bichi emirate to Kano.
