A police inspector attached to the Imo State Government House has been found dead in his room under circumstances that have sparked concern within the security community and raised questions about welfare and internal oversight in the Nigeria Police Force.

The officer, identified as Inspector Ekele Peter, a native of Ofante in Kogi State, was discovered lifeless on Friday, days after he was believed to have died.

A security source disclosed that Inspector Peter reportedly passed away on Tuesday, but his body was not found until Friday, when colleagues became alarmed and checked his room.

A video obtained by SaharaReporters shows the inspector lying on the floor of the room without clothes. In the footage, some of his colleagues, visibly shaken by the scene, were seen covering his body with a wrapper after making the grim discovery.

Details surrounding the circumstances of Inspector Peter’s death remain unclear. As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued an official statement to explain the cause of death or whether foul play is suspected. It is also not yet known if an autopsy has been ordered or if an internal investigation has commenced.

Inspector Peter was attached to the Imo State Government House, a sensitive posting that typically involves close security duties. His sudden death has therefore heightened anxiety among fellow officers and the public, particularly amid ongoing concerns about stress, welfare challenges, and mental health issues faced by security personnel across the country.

The incident comes against the backdrop of other troubling developments within the police force in recent days. SaharaReporters had earlier reported that police authorities in Niger State detained several officers assigned to an internal arms audit following the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) who was under investigation for alleged illegal ammunition dealings.

In that case, the Niger State Police Command confirmed that officers were arrested over negligence during an audit involving DSP Abdullahi Isah, who was attached to Mopol 12 under the B Division Police Command along Paikoro Road in Minna. Isah had earlier been arrested on suspicion of supplying ammunition to bandits.

According to the police, an audit team from Abuja travelled to Minna to conduct a routine annual inspection of arms and ammunition after a tip-off. During the exercise, discrepancies were reportedly discovered involving 13 AK-47 rifles and more than 2,000 rounds of ammunition.

While the audit was still ongoing, DSP Isah allegedly picked up a pistol from his office and shot himself, dying instantly. Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, said the officers detailed for the audit and investigation were arrested for negligence, having allowed such a situation to occur.

“On December 16, 2025, at about 2:30pm, DSP Abdullahi Isah, who was initially arrested on December 15 on suspicion of illegal ammunition dealings, was taken to his office for a routine arms audit. Unfortunately, during the audit, the officer shot himself in the head with a pistol he picked from the office and died on the spot,” Abiodun said.

He added that investigations were ongoing and clarified that the 13 AK-47 rifles were not yet confirmed missing, stressing that it was too early to draw conclusions.

Although the Niger State incident is unrelated to the death of Inspector Peter in Imo State, both cases have renewed public scrutiny of internal controls, welfare conditions, and accountability mechanisms within the police force.

For now, the circumstances surrounding Inspector Peter’s death remain shrouded in mystery. As Nigerians await an official statement from police authorities, many are calling for a thorough and transparent investigation to determine what happened and to ensure that any underlying issues are properly addressed.
