Peter Obi Cries Out Over Demolition of Younger Brother’s Multi-Billion Naira Company in Lagos Without Explanation

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has raised serious concerns over what he describes as a growing culture of lawlessness and human rights abuse in Nigeria, following the demolition of a property belonging to his younger brother in Ikeja, Lagos.

Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election, made the claims in a detailed statement on social media, alleging that the Lagos State government orchestrated the demolition without proper legal process, warning that such acts erode investor confidence and endanger civil liberties.

According to Obi, he received a distress call early Tuesday morning from his youngest brother, who informed him that a group of unknown individuals, accompanied by security personnel, had invaded their company premises and began demolition operations without prior notice or official documentation.

“He had just come in from Port Harcourt and was denied entry to the property. Security men on site told him the building was being pulled down and that the process had started over the weekend,” Obi wrote.

Upon rushing to Lagos from Abuja, the former Anambra governor said he was blocked from accessing the property but managed to speak with those conducting the demolition. He was told a court judgment had authorized the action.

However, upon inspection, Obi claims the judgment was against “an unknown person and squatters,” not his brother’s registered company, which he says has held ownership of the property for over a decade.

“No one was served. No names were written. Yet they showed up with excavators and began destroying a structure that had stood for over 15 years,” he stated. “There was no demolition order, no proper documentation, and no identifiable authority taking responsibility.”

The incident has sparked public outcry on social media, with many questioning the legality and timing of the demolition. Critics have pointed to what they describe as a broader pattern of intimidation against opposition voices and private enterprise.

Obi did not mince words about the state of governance in the country, stating that his experience is emblematic of what many Nigerians endure daily.

“I know what I have been going through just because I contested a presidential election, which is my legitimate right. If this level of lawlessness can happen to someone with legal ownership, what hope does the ordinary Nigerian have?” he said.

The former presidential hopeful lamented Nigeria’s deteriorating human rights indicators and warned that continued disregard for due process and property rights would deter both local and foreign investment.

“Nigeria is becoming a lawless country,” Obi said, quoting a foreign investor who recently told him that while they invest in Ghana, Senegal, and the Benin Republic, they avoid Nigeria due to its lack of legal protections.

Obi reaffirmed his commitment to building a “New Nigeria” where rule of law, respect for property, and protection of civil liberties are upheld.

“I remain committed to a better Nigeria where lawlessness will be a thing of the past, protection of life and property, respect for human rights, care for the less privileged, and basic education for all children. A new Nigeria is possible.”

As of press time, the Lagos State Government has yet to release an official statement regarding the demolition.
