BREAKING: Peter Obi, Atiku Strike One-Term Deal Ahead of 2027 Elections

In what could mark a significant realignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly offered Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, the position of vice president under a one-term agreement.

Multiple sources privy to ongoing coalition talks revealed that the two leaders held a crucial private meeting earlier this year in the United Kingdom where the offer was first tabled.

According to insiders, Atiku has pledged to serve only one term if elected president, after which he would hand over to Obi. While Obi is said to have accepted the proposal in principle, he is still in consultation with key supporters before making any public declaration.

This proposed alliance could rekindle the political partnership between Atiku and Obi, who previously ran on the same ticket under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019.

Their campaign at the time was unsuccessful, losing to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Given the internal crises currently plaguing both the PDP and Labour Party, talks are reportedly veering toward a new platform, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) emerging as a frontrunner.

“The Social Democratic Party was initially in the picture, but with signs of APC infiltration, focus has shifted to the ADC,” a source said. Some party loyalists have already begun engaging with ADC leadership and quietly defecting.

In March, Atiku, Obi, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others publicly hinted at forming a political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

While no formal coalition has been announced yet, sources indicate that groundwork is steadily being laid.

A political insider familiar with the developments noted, “All parties are aware that by May 2026, presidential candidates will likely be unveiled. This coalition is strategic and time-sensitive.”

The UK meeting between Atiku and Obi is said to have been pivotal.

“Obi requested time to consult his supporters, but recent developments suggest he has agreed to be Atiku’s running mate. They’re even considering signing a formal agreement,” the source added.

Although Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, acknowledged that talks were ongoing, he declined to confirm any finalized deal. “Both of them are focused on building a strong coalition to unseat the clueless APC government in 2027,” Ibe said.

Peter Ahmeh, a close Obi associate and secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, also withheld confirmation, stating only that Obi remains committed to the unity of the Labour Party.

Meanwhile, Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, denied knowledge of any such arrangement. “He has not shared this with me. As far as I know, nothing of the sort has been discussed,” Tanko said.

ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu confirmed ongoing coalition talks with opposition figures and even some individuals within the ruling APC.

He revealed that 21 former national chairmen of deregistered political parties have joined the ADC and hinted that a major announcement is imminent.

“We’ve been meeting frequently with critical stakeholders. By the grace of God, before the end of this week, we’ll unveil some of these developments to the world,” Nwosu said.

If successful, the Atiku-Obi ticket could dramatically reshape Nigeria’s political landscape and pose the most formidable opposition challenge yet to President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
