PDP Working Against the North, Commits ‘Big Error’ by Zoning Presidency to South — Hashim

A former presidential candidate and frontline politician, Dr. Olawepo Gbenga Hashim, has faulted the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, describing the move as a “big error.”

Hashim, who spoke on Monday during an appearance on Channels TV Politics Today, said the resolution of the PDP’s National Executive Council (NEC) at its 102nd meeting in Abuja could trigger a constitutional crisis, warning that it amounts to discrimination against aspirants from the North.

“The NEC has taken a position that in my view is a big error. This decision discriminates against presidential aspirants from the North and could create unnecessary constitutional problems for the party,” he said.

The business mogul and political strategist further hinted that northern aspirants who feel shortchanged by the arrangement may begin to explore alternative platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, Hashim acknowledged that the process leading to the zoning decision was democratic, noting that it had the backing of the party’s organs. He stressed that the PDP has always prided itself on internal democracy but maintained that the latest zoning policy runs against the spirit of fairness.

The PDP, which is battling to reposition itself after its defeat in the 2023 general elections, is expected to face stiff internal wrangling over the presidential ticket as preparations for 2027 gather momentum.
