PDP Leaders Call on Members to Join Coalition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have called on members of the party to join a broader political coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

The call was made in a communiqué issued at the end of a high-level meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Other PDP stalwarts present included former Senate President David Mark, former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, ex-governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), and Liyel Imoke (Cross River).

The PDP leaders expressed deep concern over what they described as the party’s “disturbing condition,” blaming its decline in part on internal mismanagement and the destabilizing influence of the APC.

According to the communiqué, “The inability of PDP leadership to lead the party by its constitution, rules and regulations led it into a chaotic and undisciplined party.” The leaders lamented the erosion of the founding vision of the party and its diminished role both in Nigeria and across the African continent.

They urged “well-meaning members of the PDP and patriotic Nigerians” to align with the emerging coalition, emphasizing the need to restore national unity, economic stability, democratic values, and institutional integrity.

The development comes amid growing speculation that opposition forces are preparing to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform for the 2027 elections. Reports earlier this week suggested that the coalition is moving closer to formalizing the arrangement, with key figures from various opposition parties expected to rally behind the ADC banner.

The PDP leaders described the APC-led federal government as a “disaster,” citing economic hardship, rising insecurity, and Nigeria’s deteriorating international image.

“Painfully, Nigeria is now a diminished country and an embarrassment on the world stage,” the communiqué read. “The APC government, which came into being on the false and evil propaganda to save Nigeria from PDP, is now a disaster to our nation and therefore must be voted out of power.”

They warned that all meaningful indicators of development have collapsed under the current administration, and called for urgent collective action to rescue the country.
