PDP Governors Dump Atiku, Reject Coalition To Unseat Tinubu
Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have distanced the party from ongoing efforts to form a grand opposition coalition, notably rejecting any alliance primarily focused on unseating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The firm stance was announced by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, during a press conference following a high-level strategy meeting of PDP leaders held in Ibadan, Oyo State, over the weekend.
“We are open to dialogue and building bridges with like-minded individuals and political organizations,” Mohammed told journalists. “However, the PDP will not tie its future to any coalition that is solely aimed at fighting the APC. Our focus is on rebuilding our party and presenting a credible alternative to Nigerians.”
His remarks come amid growing speculation over a possible political alliance featuring prominent opposition figures, including former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.

These figures have been vocal in their calls for a united front to challenge the APC in the next general election.
Despite the mounting buzz, the PDP leadership is signaling a shift toward self-reliance, choosing instead to focus on internal reforms, party unity, and grassroots mobilization ahead of 2027. According to insiders, the party is wary of entering hasty alliances that lack ideological clarity and long-term strategic alignment — a lesson drawn from previous coalition experiences.
Political analysts say the PDP’s move could reshape opposition politics in Nigeria. While some believe the party is strengthening its independence and long-term credibility, others argue the decision might limit its ability to mount a formidable challenge against the APC without broader support.

As the countdown to 2027 begins in earnest, the PDP appears determined to carve its own path — one rooted in internal consolidation rather than coalition politics, at least for now.
