Meanwhile, the Federal High Court in Abuja intervened in another aspect of the party’s leadership battle. On Friday, Justice Peter Lifu issued a restraining order preventing the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) from removing Umar Damagum as the party’s Acting National Chairman.

Justice Lifu’s order ensures that Damagum retains his position until the party’s national convention, scheduled for December 2025.

The clarification comes after widespread reports suggested that Damagum had been removed from his position. However, Melaye emphasized that the party acted in accordance with a court order and suspended Damagum rather than dismissing him outright.

“In compliance with the court order not to sack Damagum, he has been suspended and not sacked. We have obeyed the court order because the PDP is a law-abiding party. The suspension will aid the resolution of the crisis in our party,” Melaye explained.

Earlier, News Week Nigeria reported that the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) had approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the new Acting National Chairman, effective immediately. The decision follows the party’s constitutional provisions, as amended in 2017.
