Little to No Voting Recorded in Fubara’s Polling Unit as Governor Shuns LG Election

Ward 5 in Opobo Nkoro Local Government Area, the home ward of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, witnessed little to no voter activity on Saturday as the governor failed to show up for the local government elections.

Polling units across the ward were largely deserted, with electoral officials left idle for most of the day. Residents attributed the low turnout to Fubara’s reported absence from town, noting that his presence would have encouraged more participation.

The exercise, which is being conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), is taking place across 23 local government areas, 319 wards and 4,442 polling units in the state. RSIEC is currently being overseen by a sole administrator, Ibokette Ibas, following the dissolution of the commission’s former leadership.

Saturday’s poll marks the first local government election since the Supreme Court nullified the October 2024 council polls, citing breaches of the Electoral Act. That election was organised under Fubara’s watch but was later thrown out, leading to a political storm in the state.

The governor himself was suspended from office for six months in March 2025 after his fallout with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, deepened the political crisis in Rivers. His absence during Saturday’s exercise has further fueled speculations about lingering tensions and waning influence in his home constituency.
