Islamic State Terrorists Launch Deadly Attack on Nigerian Military Camp, Killing 20 Soldiers
At least 20 soldiers were killed on Saturday in a brutal attack by Islamic State fighters on a military camp in Karito, Borno State.
The coordinated assault, which included the use of a car bomb and heavy weaponry, marks one of the deadliest attacks in the region this year.
Military sources reported that the insurgents stormed the camp, engaging in fierce clashes with soldiers. They eventually overran the facility, setting it ablaze and destroying military equipment, including a vehicle. The attackers also made away with several four-wheel drive vehicles and heavy machine guns before retreating.
While the Nigerian military has yet to release an official statement on the death toll, sources on the ground confirmed that about 20 soldiers lost their lives, with several others injured. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum expressed profound grief over the loss of the soldiers, extending his condolences to their families. In a statement, he condemned the attack and highlighted the persistent threat posed by insurgents in the region.
“This tragic incident is a painful reminder of the sacrifices being made daily by our military personnel in the fight against terrorism,” Zulum said. “We remain resolute in our commitment to restoring peace and security to Borno State and the entire Northeast.”
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to resettlement and development programs, even in the face of ongoing attacks. He also urged residents to support the armed forces in their efforts to combat terrorism.
The attack underscores the continuing challenges faced by Nigeria in its fight against insurgent groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP). Despite military offensives and international support, these groups remain active, frequently targeting security forces and civilians in the troubled region.
The Nigerian government has pledged to intensify efforts to address the insurgency and bring lasting peace to the region.
