INEC Rejects Fubara’s Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie’s Resignation, Says He Remains a Lawmaker

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that it does not recognize the resignation of Ehie Edison, Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that he is still the sitting lawmaker for Ahoada East Constituency Two.

Gabriel Yomere, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Rivers State, made this known during an interview with Super 93.3 FM. He explained that the Commission will not organize a bye-election for the constituency because the seat is not vacant.

According to Yomere, neither INEC nor the Rivers State House of Assembly has formally accepted Ehie’s purported resignation.

“Rt. Honourable Ehie Edison remains the member representing Ahoada East Constituency Two. We did not accept any resignation letter, and the House also did not accept it,” Yomere said.

Edison, a former Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, announced his resignation as a lawmaker and Assembly Leader at the height of the recent political crisis in the state. He was later appointed Chief of Staff by Governor Fubara.

Despite recent reports that Governor Fubara had dismissed all commissioners and political appointees affected by the Supreme Court ruling, INEC maintains that Edison’s legislative seat is still legally occupied.

Yomere further disclosed that the only constituency where a bye-election may be considered this year is Khana Constituency Two, formerly represented by the late Dinebari Loolo.

He also vowed that the Commission would maintain neutrality in all its dealings.

“There will be no preferential treatment to any political party,” the REC assured.

The clarification puts to rest speculations about a possible bye-election in Ahoada East Constituency Two and raises new questions about the status of Ehie Edison’s dual role in the current political climate in Rivers State.
