INEC Denies Recognizing Julius Abure as Labour Party Chairman, Usman Urges Public to Shun Misinformation
The ongoing leadership tussle within the Labour Party took a new turn on Friday as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) publicly denied reports claiming it had recognized Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman.
Reacting swiftly, the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, issued a strongly worded statement, calling on party members, civil society groups, and the public to disregard what she described as “fake news” being spread by Abure and his supporters.

INEC, through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, clarified that it had not issued any statement or taken any action to restore Abure as chairman.
The commission’s statement sought to put an end to the speculation surrounding the party’s leadership, describing such claims as false and misleading.

“This unambiguous disclaimer, issued in real-time and without delay, goes to the very heart of the matter and exposes the falsehoods and desperation that have continued to emanate from Mr. Abure and his collaborators,” Usman said.
She further asserted that Julius Abure’s tenure as chairman had long expired and that any attempts to claim otherwise were “media propaganda” lacking legal or moral credibility.
“It is both laughable and insulting to the intelligence of Nigerians and party faithfuls that Mr. Abure and his clique continue to parade themselves as party leadership despite lacking legal standing, moral credibility, and institutional backing,” she stated.

Usman emphasized that the Labour Party is a democratic institution and not the personal enterprise of any individual or group. She reaffirmed the party’s commitment to principles of integrity, transparency, and the rule of law.
“The era of impunity is over. The Labour Party belongs to the people, not to a cabal,” she concluded.
The statement marks the latest development in the Labour Party’s internal leadership crisis, which has continued to draw national attention and could have implications for the party’s unity ahead of future elections.
