Former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing to an end a decades-long political journey with the party.

However, political observers believe his exit signals a deeper political shift, with far-reaching consequences for the party’s strength in Abia North and the state at large.

“I write to formally inform you of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately… While it was a difficult decision to make, it is the best course of action for me at this time,” his letter read in part.

Oko Chukwu, a seasoned Chartered Accountant, former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, and immediate past Deputy Governor under Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, is regarded as one of the most influential political figures in Abia North. Known for his grassroots mobilization skills and strategic reach, his political departure is already sparking intense speculation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Close associates say whichever party he joins next will gain instant political mileage, thanks to his vast network, loyal following, and years of administrative experience.

During his years in the PDP, Oko Chukwu was seen as a stabilizing force, especially in times of internal party disputes. His exit comes amid growing discontent within the Abia PDP, with whispers of more defections to come as party members weigh their future.

Although he has not disclosed his next political move, multiple sources suggest that several political parties are already in talks to lure him into their ranks.

Political analysts warn that his resignation could weaken the PDP’s dominance in Abia North, a zone he has significantly influenced for years. The development marks what could be the beginning of a major political realignment in the state.

The resignation letter was formally received by the PDP Ward Chairman of Ndi Elu Ward in Nkporo, Ama Nwoke Ibe.
