Gunmen Attack Convoy of House of Reps Member, Police Officer Killed
A police officer attached to Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the member representing Isialangwa North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, has been confirmed dead following an attack on the lawmaker’s convoy.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. at Ubakala, Umuahia South, according to reports.
Witnesses say the attackers, dressed in black and wearing police-style armor jackets, blocked the convoy with a Toyota Corolla. At the time, Hon. Onwusibe was not present in the vehicle. However, two police officers and a driver were traveling in the convoy when the ambush occurred.
The gunmen reportedly opened fire on the police escorts after initially identifying themselves as law enforcement. In the ensuing chaos, one police officer was killed, while another sustained injuries. The attackers fled the scene before reinforcements from the Ubakala police station arrived and engaged in gunfire.
Attempts to reach the Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command for comments were unsuccessful. However, police sources suggest the attackers may have been kidnappers. Officers are reportedly pursuing leads to apprehend the suspects.
The tragic incident has heightened concerns about the safety of public officials and the persistent security challenges in the region. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.
