Former SGF Babachir Lawal Resigns from APC, Joins ADC
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has formally resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in what many observers see as a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lawal, a key figure in the formation of the APC and a staunch ally of President Muhammadu Buhari during the party’s formative years, announced his defection on Saturday.

He cited a deepening disillusionment with the ruling party’s direction and leadership as his reason for exiting.
In a statement issued shortly after his resignation, Lawal said, “I can no longer be part of a political party that has strayed far from the ideals on which it was founded. The APC has lost its way, and it has become evident that meaningful reforms from within are no longer possible.”

The former SGF’s move to the ADC comes at a time when the party is enjoying renewed attention, following a wave of defections and strategic realignments among key opposition figures.
His entry into the ADC is expected to bolster the party’s profile and strengthen its positioning as a credible alternative platform ahead of the next electoral cycle.
