Professor Jibril Aminu, a distinguished Nigerian statesman, academic, and former Minister of Petroleum and Education, has passed away at the age of 85.

 

According to a family source, Aminu died on Thursday in Abuja after a period of illness.

Funeral prayers were scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the National Mosque in Abuja, after which his remains were to be flown to Yola and then to his hometown of Song in Adamawa State for burial.

Born in 1939 in Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Aminu led a remarkable life of public service and academic achievement. He trained as a cardiologist, graduating in 1965 as the best medical student at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. He later obtained a PhD in Medicine from the prestigious Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London in 1972.

 

Aminu held several key positions throughout his career. He served as Nigeria’s Minister of Education before being appointed Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources from 1989 to 1992, a period marked by major developments in the country’s oil sector. He was also Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States between 1999 and 2003.

In 2003, Aminu was elected to the Nigerian Senate, representing Adamawa Central, where he served two terms until 2011.

 

His death marks the end of a legacy that spanned medicine, diplomacy, and public policy. He is remembered as a dedicated public servant who contributed significantly to Nigeria’s development across multiple sectors.
