Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has been reportedly arrested in Abuja by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The former minister was said to have been picked up early Wednesday at his residence on Justice Mohammed Bello Road in the Federal Capital Territory.

Witnesses reported seeing armed security personnel arrive at the property before Ngige was taken away. However, the reason behind the operation has not yet been disclosed, as the EFCC has not issued any official statement.

Shortly after the news broke, speculation flooded social media, with many users claiming that Ngige had been kidnapped. The rumours quickly stirred public anxiety given Nigeria’s security climate and Ngige’s recent brushes with danger.

However, in a swift reaction, Ngige’s former media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, debunked the kidnap rumours. In a short statement clarifying the situation, he confirmed that the former minister was in EFCC custody.

“Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past minister of labour and employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC. More details later,” Chukwuelobe stated.

His clarification helped calm the intense speculation that had already begun circulating online, though it did little to answer lingering questions about the nature of the arrest.

Ngige has been in the news recently after his convoy was attacked by unidentified armed men in Anambra State. The attack occurred weeks ago, but Ngige was not present in the affected vehicle at the time, sparing him from harm.

As of now, the specific allegations or investigations leading to his arrest remain unknown. Efforts to reach the EFCC for confirmation or comment have not been successful, and Nigerians await more details from the agency.

The developing situation has sparked conversations across political circles and among the public, with many calling for transparency regarding the circumstances of Ngige’s detention.

More information is expected as the EFCC and other security agencies provide updates on the matter.
