Cross River PDP Dares Wike, Endorses It’s Own Chairmanship Candidate for September 27 Congress

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has openly challenged the influence of the Nyesom Wike-led faction by presenting its own candidate for the upcoming state chairmanship election.

On Thursday, the caucus of the Central Senatorial District unveiled Tim Ekawu as its preferred candidate for the September 27 congress.

The move comes barely 24 hours after the Southern Senatorial District also threw its weight behind Ekawu in defiance of Wike’s loyalists within the party.

During a meeting of stakeholders in the central district, members unanimously declared that Wike, now serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), could no longer dictate the affairs of the PDP in Cross River.

They blamed the party’s internal crises on what they described as “transactional politics” being practiced by some members and vowed to restore cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a communiqué signed by Anthony Edako, the PDP State Secretary, the caucus affirmed its commitment to the decisions of the national leadership on the date and venue of the party’s national convention.

The statement also commended PDP National Woman Leader, Mrs. Amina Darasimi, for her efforts in repositioning the party in the state and expressed support for Edako’s return as state secretary in the coming congress.

“The meeting without equivocation pledges its unalloyed support for the candidature of Tim Ekawu for the position of state chairman of PDP. After four years, the PDP needs the calm and level-headed leadership that Ekawu brings to the table,” the communiqué read in part.

With both the southern and central districts now aligned behind Ekawu, the development sets the stage for a major showdown in the September 27 congress, as the Cross River PDP continues to distance itself from Wike’s influence.
