Crack in Akwa Ibom Government House as Three Commissioners Rebuke Governor Umo Eno, Refuse To Go With Him To APC
A fresh political crisis is gathering in Akwa Ibom State following Governor Umo Eno’s surprise defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move, which the governor announced during a ceremony at the Government House in Uyo on Friday, has sparked a wave of discontent within his administration, culminating in the resignation of three key commissioners.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong, Commissioner for Economic Development, Prof. Eno Ibanga, and Commissioner for Finance, Emem Bob, all tendered their resignations within hours of the governor’s announcement. Their decision to step down is being viewed as a direct repudiation of Eno’s shift in political allegiance.
The governor, while making his defection public, explained that the decision came after “three months of wide consultation” with stakeholders across the state. He cited his admiration for President Bola Tinubu and the need for Akwa Ibom to align with the federal government as the primary motivations behind the move.
“We’re joining the APC today in the state’s interest,” Eno said. “We are not joining the APC from a position of weakness, but from a position of strength and resolve. It is time for Akwa Ibom to align with the center to secure continued development.”

Despite assuring citizens that his commitment to the state’s welfare would remain unchanged, regardless of party affiliation, the political fallout was immediate. The resigning commissioners reportedly expressed discomfort with the governor’s unilateral decision, suggesting it did not reflect the collective will of the administration or the people they serve.
Sources close to the Government House say the commissioners felt blindsided by the defection and were unwilling to compromise their political values by following Eno to the APC. One insider noted that “this is not just about party politics—it’s about trust and direction.”
The governor’s defection was witnessed by a host of APC dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, as well as Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), and Bassey Otu (Cross River).
