Borno Deputy Governor Escapes Death as Max Air Plane Suffers Engine Fire

Borno State Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur, along with over 100 passengers, narrowly escaped a potentially fatal accident after a Max Air plane encountered an engine fire caused by a bird strike shortly after takeoff from Maiduguri International Airport.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, around 7 p.m., when the aircraft, bound for Abuja, experienced engine failure approximately 10 minutes into the flight.

The pilot and crew managed to safely execute an emergency landing back at the airport, avoiding what could have been a disastrous outcome.

A Max Air official, who requested anonymity, confirmed the details of the harrowing event on Thursday morning. “Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft struck a bird mid-air, which led to one of the engines catching fire. The pilot acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all passengers,” the official said.

The emergency landing left passengers visibly shaken. Many chose to retrieve their luggage and return home rather than continue their journey. However, Max Air promptly dispatched another aircraft from Kano to ensure that the passengers, including the deputy governor and other government officials, reached Abuja safely.

Among the passengers were notable government dignitaries, including a state commissioner, special advisers, and senior aides, all traveling as part of the deputy governor’s delegation.

The affected aircraft remains grounded at Maiduguri International Airport, undergoing repairs. Meanwhile, investigations have been launched to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Airport authorities have reassured travelers of their unwavering commitment to safety and commended the crew for their professionalism during the emergency.
