Atiku Cannot Be Intimidated, Has Right to Contest in 2027 – PDP Chieftain Declares

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has declared that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remains a formidable political force ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, insisting that no amount of pressure or criticism can deter him from pursuing his ambition.

Speaking amid renewed calls from some quarters for Atiku to step aside in favor of younger candidates, Sowunmi emphasized that Atiku’s decision to contest is protected by the Nigerian constitution and should be respected by all.

“The first thing people must understand is that a lot of suggestions, persuasion, argument, pressure, and bullies come into play in politics,” Sowunmi said.

“But whether any human being will contest any election is purely the right granted to them by the constitution and according to the platforms of the party.”

While critics have urged him to make way for a younger generation, Sowunmi insists that such decisions are not for the public to dictate.

“What I find a little bit curious is that instead of people talking about how they’re going to win the general election, they have devoted too much time to trying to bully a man that cannot be bullied,” he added.

He described Atiku as someone who becomes even more determined when faced with pressure, saying, “I know very well, if anybody tries to bully him, you basically do only to make him more resolute in his position.”

Sowunmi’s remarks come as political maneuvering intensifies within Nigeria’s major parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, with debates ongoing over leadership, party direction, and generational change.
