Arise TV Journalist Shot Dead in Abuja
The Nigerian media community is in shock following the killing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a young journalist with Arise News Channel, who was shot dead during an armed robbery at her home in the Katampe area of Abuja.

Maduagwu, popularly known as “Sommie” among friends and colleagues, was 29 years old. Born on December 26, 1995, she had already made a name for herself as a talented news anchor, reporter, and producer. With a background in law, she was revered for her intellect, clarity of thought, and dedication to public-interest journalism.

In a statement confirming her death, Arise News management described her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”
“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the Arise News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu,” the statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi read.

“Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.
“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
Her colleagues have been paying tribute to her warmth, professionalism and commitment to the newsroom. Many recalled her infectious energy and drive to tell impactful stories.

Condolences have also poured in across social media from journalists, viewers, and members of the legal community who knew her personally or were inspired by her work.
Security officials say police have opened an investigation into the attack, which has reignited public concern over rising insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.
Arise News said it would honour her memory by upholding the journalistic values she embodied.
Maduagwu is survived by her parents, siblings and extended family. Funeral details are expected to be announced soon.
