Adeleke Loses PDP Structure as Hundreds Defect to ADC in Osun, Aregbesola Reacts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has suffered a fresh setback as hundreds of its members in Ayedire Local Government Area on Tuesday dumped the ruling party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The defectors, led by Tunji Ogunrinu, were formally received by officials of the Omoluabi Progressives, a political movement backed by the National Secretary of the ADC and former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

In a statement issued by the Publicity and Organising Secretary of the Omoluabi Progressives, Oluwaseun Abosede, Ogunrinu explained that their decision to leave the PDP was borne out of frustration with what he described as poor internal party management and the failure of the leadership to reward loyal members.

“The decision to part ways with the PDP was not taken lightly but was borne out of dissatisfaction with poor internal management of the ruling party and the failure to reward loyalty among its members,” Ogunrinu stated.

Another defector, Abdulganiyu Akeem, speaking on behalf of the group, said the move was a call for better governance in the state.

“People of Osun deserve better governance. It is time for citizens to ‘arise and shine,’ rather than continue with suffering and smiling,” he declared.

Former Osun State lawmaker representing Ayedire Constituency, Gbenga Ogunkanmi, who facilitated the mass defection, described the new entrants as political heavyweights and grassroots mobilisers whose presence would significantly boost the ADC’s strength in Osun.

The Chairman of Omoluabi Progressives, Azeez Adesiji, while welcoming the defectors, assured them of full integration into the party’s structures, adding that the ADC was ready to provide a credible alternative for Osun citizens.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson for the PDP in Osun, Oladele Bamiji, downplayed the defections, insisting the individuals involved were not recognised members of the party.
“We don’t know those that defected. They are unknown to us. Genuine party members know how to address their grievances,” Bamiji said, stressing that the PDP remained strong with a solid grassroots presence across the state.

The defection comes amid renewed political realignments in Osun, as opposition parties intensify efforts to challenge Governor Ademola Adeleke’s hold on the state ahead of future elections.
