ADC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot by APC to use Buhari’s Death for Political Gain, Alert Family Members
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared a three-day period of national mourning in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, while also raising serious concerns about what it described as attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to exploit the former leader’s death for political advantage.
In an official statement signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, Interim National Publicity Secretary of the ADC and spokesperson for the opposition coalition, the party announced that all its chapters and structures nationwide will suspend political activities and public statements from Tuesday, July 15, through Thursday, July 17, 2025.

The ADC paid tribute to Buhari’s service to Nigeria, hailing him as a man of “fierce sense of duty, personal discipline, and conviction,” whose leadership inspired millions—particularly the poor and underrepresented.
According to the party, despite ideological and political differences, Buhari’s contributions as a soldier, former military Head of State, and democratically elected President remain deeply significant.
“Regardless of political affiliations, what cannot be denied is that President Buhari served this country with a fierce sense of duty… Buhari inspired millions across social divides, especially the poor,” the statement read.

However, the ADC expressed strong disapproval of the APC’s conduct following Buhari’s death. The party accused the ruling government of trying to posture as the “chief mourners” of a man they had allegedly undermined during his lifetime.
“In the last two years, this same government did everything to tarnish Buhari’s records, dismantle his legacies, and blame him for every one of their failings,” the statement said. “Now they are attempting to harvest political gains from a national tragedy. This is sheer hypocrisy.”
The ADC went on to urge Buhari’s family and loyalists to be vigilant and resist being used for political photo-ops or narratives that distort the late leader’s legacy.

The party concluded its statement by calling on Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by upholding the values he was best known for—integrity, humility, and dedication to public service.
The late President Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983–1985 and later as a two-term civilian President from 2015–2023, passed away earlier this week. Funeral arrangements are ongoing, with tributes pouring in from across political and regional divides.
