ADC Bust Tinubu’s Last-Minute Plot to “Buy the North” with Token Appointments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of attempting to use last-minute political appointments to regain favour in Northern Nigeria after what the party describes as over a year of deliberate neglect and exclusion.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC dismissed the recent spate of federal appointments as “too little, too late,” branding them a “cynical attempt to buy back trust that has already been squandered.”

“You cannot marginalise a region for over twenty-five months and expect applause because you suddenly remembered on the twenty-sixth month that Nigeria is bigger than Lagos State,” the statement read.

The party accused the Tinubu-led administration of engaging in “political panic management,” saying the appointments were a desperate response to growing dissatisfaction, especially from the North, and the rise of a more formidable political opposition.

“For over a year, this government turned a blind eye as bandits terrorised villages in the North, as our farmers abandoned their land, and as rural economies crumbled under the weight of poorly thought-out fuel subsidy removal,” Abdullahi stated.

He further alleged that most key decisions of the administration — including the controversial removal of fuel subsidies and the allocation of high-level government positions — were made without significant Northern input or representation.

“Now, under the rising heat of public discontent and the threat of a united opposition, the President suddenly remembers that there are Nigerians outside of Lagos to consider,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC warned that the Northern populace would not be swayed by what it described as “symbolic gestures.” “Northerners as co-owners of our great federal republic know better than to be deceived by these token appointments. Tokenism is not inclusion, and symbolism is not governance,” the party stated.

Calling for genuine national integration, the ADC urged President Tinubu to discard what it labelled “Bourdillon-style appeasement politics” — a reference to Tinubu’s political stronghold in Lagos — and adopt a more inclusive, consultative leadership model.

“You cannot patch a broken roof with press releases and photo-ops. And you certainly cannot restore the trust that you have lost with the public by pretending that titles are a substitute for genuine commitment to nation-building,” the statement concluded.
