Atiku raises alarm, uncovers fresh plot by Wike to scatter coming coalition

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over alleged efforts to sabotage a looming political coalition aimed at challenging the current administration, accusing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, of leading the charge to destabilize the process.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Ibe, in an interview with News Central on Wednesday, Atiku said plans for a merger involving key political players are well underway, despite deliberate attempts to derail it.

“There have been efforts to kill the mother that will birth the baby,” Ibe said, using a metaphor to describe the emerging coalition. “But I can tell you that the mother is safe. That baby will be birthed in good health, and the fireworks will start.”

While Ibe did not provide specific names of parties involved in the merger, he hinted that the coalition would be announced soon, suggesting ongoing behind-the-scenes talks among top political actors determined to unseat the ruling government.

According to Ibe, “Those who are coalescing — the political leaders — they are talking to one another. They know exactly what is on board. All I can tell you for now is the coalition baby will be birthed sooner than later.”

Wike Under Fire

In a sharp rebuke, Ibe singled out Nyesom Wike, accusing him of actively working to impersonate the PDP and disrupt the coalition process. He claimed Wike has been assigned a “mandate” to obstruct the merger, suggesting the minister’s influence is fueling division within the opposition, particularly among governors affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“The former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of FCT has a job — a mandate — to be the undertaker,” Ibe alleged. “He has a job to ensure the impersonation of the PDP and to distract the objectives of the coalition.”

Ibe added that individuals aligned with Wike are sowing discord within the PDP in a bid to undermine the broader opposition effort. Despite this, he maintained that the PDP, as the largest opposition party, stands to gain the most from the coalition if successful.

Coalition Faces Internal Pushback

The push for a new coalition has not gone unchallenged within the PDP itself. Some members of the PDP Governors’ Forum have reportedly expressed resistance to the move, a development Ibe downplayed as the result of internal manipulation rather than genuine disagreement.

He urged PDP leaders to embrace the coalition, arguing that its success could offer a viable path back to power and national relevance for the party.

“The PDP will be the biggest beneficiary of the coalition. Their leaders should take an interest in this ongoing process,” he emphasized.

As political temperatures continue to rise ahead of 2027, the fate of the proposed coalition remains uncertain. Still, Atiku’s camp appears confident that, despite mounting opposition from within and outside the PDP, the initiative will soon take shape and challenge the status quo.
