APC Warns Jonathan Against Returning to Power in 2027, Says He Lacks Capacity to Challenge Tinubu
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against nursing any ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that he lacks the capacity to challenge President Bola Tinubu.
Reacting to speculations of mounting pressure on Jonathan to return to the political arena, APC Publicity Secretary in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, said in a statement on Friday that the former president’s years in office left Nigeria with “a legacy of corruption, insecurity, and economic stagnation.”

“While we acknowledge Jonathan’s role in ensuring a peaceful transition in 2015 — an act that earned him global respect — Nigeria has since moved beyond the politics of sentiment, nostalgia, and symbolism,” Oladejo stated.
He further argued that Jonathan’s style of leadership would not address the present realities confronting the nation.
“Good luck alone is not a governance strategy. The challenges of today and the future require bold, capable, and forward-thinking leadership, not a return to the comfort of a past that was far from perfect,” he added.

The APC chieftain also accused Jonathan’s administration of leaving behind a fragile economy and widespread insecurity. He warned that any attempt by the former president to seek a comeback could trigger constitutional and political crises, destabilizing the nation at a critical time.
Oladejo also questioned Jonathan’s political relevance, citing his absence from the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) rebuilding efforts and his perceived closeness to the APC in recent years.
“His flirtation with the APC and absence from PDP’s strategic activities raise questions about his loyalty, clarity of vision, and political intentions,” he said.

The Lagos APC maintained that the country’s progress lies in fresh leadership anchored on innovation and integrity, not recycled politicians.
“Former President Jonathan is a respected elder statesman. His legacy as a peaceful democrat is assured. But legacies are not manifestoes, and nostalgia is not governance,” Oladejo stressed.
He urged Nigerians to focus on electing visionary and accountable leaders instead of relying on “emotional shortcuts” or clinging to past administrations.
“As 2027 approaches, let us not reach backwards in desperation, but move forward with courage and clarity,” he concluded.
