APC distances itself from Tinubu’s visit to Rivers
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has distanced itself from the Wednesday visit of Bola Tinubu, the incoming president of Nigeria, to the oil-rich state.
Mr Tinubu, who won the APC’s presidential nomination on February 25, is in the state for a two-day visit to dedicate a flyover and a courthouse built by Governor Wike’s administration.
Mr. Wike has proclaimed Wednesday a public holiday and urged the state’s residents to turn out in large numbers to welcome Mr. Tinubu.
Governor Wike invited the visit, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the APC’s state spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju. He further clarified that it was unrelated to the APC in the state.
“As an outgoing governor, Mr. Wike is challenged to play less polarising politics and exercise restraint when sowing the seeds of discord among opposition political parties.
In spite of the fact that the governor had previously made it clear in interviews that he would never work with the “cancer party (APC),” Mr. Nwauju said, “we are aware that the governor has been working so hard to paint a false perception of the collapse of the APC structure in Rivers State.
After having a disagreement with the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Wike, a PDP member, supported Mr. Tinubu in the election.
The governor of Rivers State, Mr. Wike, boasted that the APC candidates in the state would not win the election and counselled Mr. Tinubu against investing in them (the APC candidates) during Mr. Tinubu’s presidential campaign rally in Rivers State.
The Rivers people already know this is not the situation on the ground, the APC spokesperson in the state said, adding that the party was aware of “Governor Wike’s plot to prank our President-elect into believing his false narrative that there is no other opposition political party existing in Rivers State.”
Mr. Nwauju stated that the Rivers APC “cannot be distracted by the antics of Gov. Wike and his co-travelers” and is “focused on pursuing justice by challenging the outcome of the tainted 18 March elections at the Elections Petitions Tribunal.”
