African countries are gradually being overrun by Islamic terrorists — PLO Lumumba

Prof. PLO Lumumba, a leading anti-corruption advocate and former dean of the Kenya Law School, is alarmed by what he perceives to be the governments of African nations’ casual approach to containing the scourge of militant Islamist terrorists ravaging the continent.

On Sunday, he made the comments while participating as a guest on Rudolf Okonkwo’s online interview programme 90Minutes Africa.

Islamist terrorists and other non-state actors currently control a sizable portion of Africa, and their violent actions have resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent people and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of others.

Many communities in the north of Nigeria have been devastated by the menacing activities of Boko Haram and the Islamic State, with their heinous tactics heavily revolving around mass kidnappings, executions, and extortion.

The Abuja declaration, which claimed that there is a plot by radical elements in the “Islamic world to Arabize and Islamize Africa,” should be considered in the context of these terrorist organisations operating in Africa, according to Prof. Lumumba, the chairman of the PLO Lumumba Foundation.

Further, the former Director of the now-defunct Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) stated that we must view the activities of Boko Haram, Al-Shabab, and the other splinter groups in Africa in the context of that Abuja declaration statement.

“This agenda is currently manifesting itself throughout the entire Sahelian region, from Mauritania to Mali to Burkina Faso to Sudan to Niger to Libya. The African governments, in my opinion, are not making any conscious efforts to deal with this particular form of Islam, which I believe is not the traditional Islam.

The terrorists in question are promoting a violent, dominating ideology under the guise of Islam. In addition, they are present in the Horn of Africa, the Sahelian region, and parts of North Africa, according to the law professor.

If the trend does not change, he expressed concern for the future of Africa.

“And we don’t appear to have a strategy in place to stop their spread across the continent. If we are not careful, in 50 years this corrupted version of Islam will rule Africa, according to Prof. Lumumba.

PLO Lumumba, a lawyer at Lumumba & Lumumba Advocates in Nairobi, Kenya, claimed that the failure of Africans to modify imported governance systems, which they called democracies, to suit their local realities is the cause of the political crises that follow the majority of elections in that continent.

He said of the system of government in Africa, “I don’t refer to them as a democracy but as an imported governance system that doesn’t reflect the African reality.

The renowned pan-Africanist also urged African governments to speak out strongly in support of the demand for compensation for the destruction that long periods of slavery and colonisation caused on the continent. This was done through the use of the African Union.

The current neo-colonial struggle for control of Africa, which includes new players like the Chinese and Russians, was acknowledged by Prof. Lumumba. He urged Africa to heed Kwame Nkrumah’s call for a united Africa with a single government, army, and currency in order to combat this new scramble. Nkrumah was the first president of Ghana.

“If we want to ensure that African countries are sustainable, we must have a united government that is confederal in nature but that permits individual units to handle matters of daily life such as policing, taxation, agriculture, education, etc.,” he said.

The confederate government will therefore only address matters pertaining to currency, foreign policy, and policy coordination. That would result in the dissolution of all boundaries and the creation of a diverse yet united continent. I can see the potential.

“It won’t happen in our lifetime, but if we plant the seed today and take care of it, in a hundred years that seed will grow into a tree, and that tree will become the Confederation of African States.”
