Adamawa Governor Fintiri Blasts Atiku

The Adamawa State Government has fired back at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over comments accusing the state of being unprepared and inactive during recent floods that devastated parts of the state and claimed more than 25 lives.

In a statement released by Humwashi Wonosikou, Press Secretary to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the government described Atiku’s remarks as “unfair and misleading,” insisting that the administration responded swiftly and effectively to the natural disaster.

Wonosikou emphasized that the Fintiri administration had mobilized emergency response efforts immediately after the floods hit, deploying personnel from the military, marine police, and other relevant agencies. He noted that Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa Farauta led the on-ground coordination in affected communities.

“We take exception to any insinuation that the Fintiri administration neglected the people,” Wonosikou stated. “Our emergency teams acted promptly, and relief efforts were mobilized without delay.”

The government highlighted its ongoing investments in flood mitigation infrastructure, including the construction of stormwater drains and the dredging of waterways, aimed at reducing the impact of seasonal floods in the state.

In addition to rescue operations, the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reportedly distributed relief items including food, medicine, and temporary shelter materials to displaced families. The state-owned boats used during the rescue operations were also cited as evidence of the government’s preparedness.

Responding to criticism about the abandoned Chochi flood-control project, the statement clarified that the project was neither initiated nor shelved by the Fintiri administration. “It is important that the public is not misled. Political leaders must avoid misrepresenting facts for political gain,” the statement warned.

The government also recalled its intervention during a similar flooding crisis in neighboring Borno State last year, where it provided both financial and logistical support — a move it says reflects a consistent commitment to humanitarian response.

“Politics aside, the people of Adamawa deserve accurate information and support,” Wonosikou said. “We remain focused on helping our people recover from this tragedy, not scoring political points.”

As of Monday, state emergency teams continued their assessment and aid operations in the flood-hit areas, with relief efforts ongoing as water levels gradually recede.
