Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, PRTT, was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison for money laundering by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday.
NEWS: Despite a decline in forex turnover, the Naira gains significantly on the official market.
Ejes Gist News reports, the court found Maina guilty of all twelve charges brought against him and his company, Common Input Property and Investment Limited, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
According to this online newspaper, Justice Abang determined that the anti-graft agency established beyond a reasonable doubt the essential elements of the charges.
He determined that the sentence would begin on October 25, 2019, and would run concurrently.
The court ordered Maina and his firm to repay the Federal Government approximately N2.1 billion discovered in their bank accounts, and then ordered the company to be wound up.
Additionally, it ordered the forfeiture to the government of Maina’s two preferred properties in Abuja’s Lifecamp and Jabi districts, as well as the auction of a bulletproof car and a BMW 5 series car discovered on the convict’s premises.
Though the law provided for a maximum sentence of 14 years, Justice Abang stated that he was moved by Maina’s entreaties for mercy.
