On July 18, the Nigerian Air Force claimed that one of its Alpha planes had been shot down after coming under heavy fire from bandits operating between Kaduna and Zamfara states.
The tragedy takes the total number of military planes that have crashed in the last year to four, including this one.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, commended the pilot of the downed Alpha Jet fighter aircraft, Flt. Lt. Abayomi Dairo, for his bravery.
In his meeting with the pilot, Irabor, who was in company with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, before travelling to a meeting with military veterans in the North-West, expressed gratitude to the pilot for the valour and bravery he had displayed in the fight against banditry.
An NAF spokesperson stated that “using his survival skills, the pilot, who came under severe ground fire from the bandits, was able to flee them and seek cover in surrounding settlements while waiting for sunset.”

There have been a number of plane crashes involving military aircraft this year, but this is the first that the Nigerian Air Force has attributed to bandits, according to the military.
When a jet crashed in May, killing the Nigerian Army’s top general and ten other officers, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru was among those who died.
An Alpha Jet had crashed in the Nigerian state of Borno, which is one of the regions where Boko Haram militants are most active, a month earlier.
