There is palpable tension in Edo State following a stern warning issued by Governor Monday Okpebholo to former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Benin over the weekend, Governor Okpebholo accused Obi of visiting the state without notifying the state government, describing the act as a breach of protocol and a security risk.

He referenced a recent visit by Obi, during which the former presidential candidate reportedly donated ₦15 million to a nursing school in Benin City.
“The man wey say he no get shishi, I’m sending a direct message to him — there’s a new sheriff in town,” Okpebholo said in a mix of English and Pidgin. “He cannot come to Edo without telling me because his security will never be guaranteed. Whatever happens to him when he is in Edo State, he will take it. I’m serious about it.”
According to the governor, Obi’s last visit allegedly triggered unrest, leading to a reported crisis in which three people lost their lives.

“Peter Obi come Edo State, he no even tell me as governor. He go nursing school, donate 15 million naira. I warn am, make he no try am again. If he come without my permission, he go see wetin go happen!” the governor said emphatically.
